Are you new to homestay? Included below are some basic etiquette points that should help things go smoothly.

Etiquette for Hosts

  • Contact your guest(s) to introduce yourself as soon as you’ve been notified by the Housing Coordinator.
  • All that your guests expect is a place to sleep and access to a bathroom. (They will provide their own toiletries.) Determine what linens your guests will need to bring for themselves.
  • Guests should expect to take care of their own meals. If you provide some food or snacks, notify your guests and ask about their eating habits/allergies to avoid conflict.
  • Let them know the best way to keep in touch with you both before and during the event. Your guests are strangers and will look to you for help.
  • Clarify what you’re providing in the areas of housing, linens, transportation and breakfast. Remind them what they’ll need to bring for themselves.
  • Let them know your schedule for the weekend and be specific about what a reasonable time in the bathroom will be. Don’t make assumptions about behavior.

  • Make your “getting ready” time as short and efficient as possible. You may not be the only guest in the house.
  • Do something for your host to express your gratitude. This isn’t necessary, but it’s nice and makes the overall hosting experience more positive.
